O Lord, open our eyes

That we might see the needs of others;

Open our ears

That we might hear

their cries,

Open our hearts

So that they need not

be without

nourishment and hope;

Let us not be afraid to defend the weak

Because of the anger

of the strong,

Nor defend the poor because of the rich;

Show us where Love and Hope and Faith

are needed

And use us to bring them to your people;

Open our eyes and ears

That we might this day

be able

to do your work,

For peace and justice

wherever that

may take us.

Dear Fellow Vincentians and Friends of the Poor,

Open the eyes of our hearts, Lord...

As a new year begins we recognize that times are ever changing and so we must open our eyes and hearts to the changing needs of those we serve.  We must have a vision that is clear and ever focused on promoting the dignity and well being of all of our brothers and sisters.

If our goals are to be fully realized and reached, we must see them clearly by assessing the kinds of needs that continue to exist in our communities; And then we must devise appropriate visions and strategies for new and more comprehensive efforts, to keep up with the growth and development of our ministry as it strives to help those who continue to be affected by this economy and the looming effects of poverty.

If our objectives are to invite others to participate in the Society and to fully engage in a life of service to the poor, then we must provide them with compelling opportunities to do so and a clear vision of their vocation.

Our vision must be clear when the love of Christ impels us to serve the poor.  We must see clearly and understand clearly the rights we are called to protect and secure.

Does our vision include securing for the poor the right to daily bread, to health, to dignity and hope?

Does it include giving respect to those in prison and of old age?

Does it strive to promote the right to shelter, work and education?

Does our vision promote the celebration of and provide the protection of all human life in all stages - from the womb to the tomb?

Our Founder envisioned a world where charity had no boundaries and justice reached across the continents:  "I wish for the whole world to be embraced in a network of charity" (Blessed Frederic Ozanam).

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul has inherited through our rich history this vision.  We are recipients of a great commandment, "You shall love God with all of your heart, with all of your being, with all of your strength, and your neighbor as yourself" (Luke 10:25-28).

Our ministry is a vision of God, our love given to others is a response to God's love for us.  Since our loving God cannot be seen, we experience Him through loving others, especially those who are in need of our love.  Anyone who sees others without loving, does not see clearly the vision God has for us.

May this New Year focus our eyes on the injustices many do not see and may our hearts have a clearer vision to bear witness to the suffering of others.  May our love for Christ impel us to be visionaries that lead the way to a future that brings to others God's graces of FAITH, HOPE AND LOVE.

Open the eyes of our hearts Lord...we want to see You, love You and serve You.

May your New Year be blessed with an abundance of God's Love.
